Gaylord Boxes: The Ultimate Buyer's Guide

Gaylord boxes — also known as bulk bins, pallet boxes, or tote boxes — are large corrugated containers designed to sit on a standard pallet. They are workhorses of the industrial packaging world, used for everything from shipping auto parts to storing recyclable materials. This guide covers everything you need to know before buying gaylords.

What Is a Gaylord Box?

A gaylord box is a large corrugated container, typically measuring 48" x 40" x 36" (length x width x height) to match a standard pallet footprint. The name "gaylord" comes from the Gaylord Container Corporation, which popularized this style of packaging. Today, the term is used generically across the industry.

Types of Gaylord Boxes

By Wall Construction

  • Single Wall — Lightest option, suitable for lightweight bulk materials (up to 500 lbs)
  • Double Wall — Most common, good for medium-weight products (up to 1,500 lbs)
  • Triple Wall — Heaviest duty, for dense or heavy materials (up to 3,500 lbs)

By Bottom Style

  • Full Bottom — Solid one-piece bottom, most common for new gaylords
  • Folder Bottom — Interlocking flaps on the bottom, easy to fold flat
  • Bliss Style — Separate bottom piece, common for industrial applications
  • Octagonal — Eight-sided design for maximum strength with minimum material

By Top Style

  • Four Full Flaps — Standard closure, fully enclosed top
  • Two Full Flaps — Partial coverage, easier access
  • No Flaps (Open Top) — For bulk filling applications
  • Lid Style — Separate removable lid piece

Standard Gaylord Specifications

While gaylords come in many sizes, the most common specifications are:

  • Dimensions: 48" x 40" x 36" (fits standard pallet)
  • Weight capacity: 1,000-3,500 lbs depending on wall construction
  • ECT rating: 51-82 ECT for double and triple wall
  • Material: Kraft or recycled linerboard
  • Weight (empty): 25-65 lbs depending on construction

Used vs. New Gaylords

Used gaylords cost 50-70% less than new ones and are perfectly suitable for most industrial applications. A used gaylord that has been stored properly retains the vast majority of its original strength. Many businesses prefer used gaylords for sustainability reasons as well.

Note: Arlington Boxes maintains a large inventory of used gaylords in various conditions. Our A-grade used gaylords look and perform like new at a fraction of the cost.

Common Applications

  • Manufacturing — collecting and shipping parts, scrap, and finished goods
  • Agriculture — harvesting and transporting produce
  • Recycling — collecting recyclable materials
  • Warehousing — bulk storage of small items
  • Moving — large-scale relocations and cleanouts
  • Retail — store fixture storage and seasonal merchandise

Pricing Factors

Gaylord pricing depends on several factors: new vs. used, wall construction (single, double, or triple), condition grade for used boxes, quantity ordered, and current market conditions for corrugated materials. Used gaylords typically range from $8-$25 each, while new gaylords range from $25-$75+ depending on specifications.

Tips for Buying Gaylords

  • Buy in bulk for the best per-unit pricing
  • Consider used gaylords first — they offer the best value
  • Match the wall construction to your weight requirements
  • Inspect for moisture damage, which significantly weakens corrugated board
  • Store flat when not in use to save warehouse space
  • Establish a recurring order for consistent supply and pricing
Tip: If you use gaylords regularly, ask about our recurring delivery service. We can set up weekly or monthly deliveries so you never run out.
